During February, TSP staff successfully replaced the floor of two aboveground storage tanks (ASTs) for a client in Detroit, Michigan.

Tank Floor Replacement in Detroit, Michigan

TSP had previously performed an API-653 inspection of the 50,000 and 30,000 gallon tanks.  The inspection revealed significant pitting across the entire surface of both tank floors.  Based on the data, the Owner determined that total floor replacement would be more cost effective than more common solutions, such as patch plates and puddle welds, to have the tanks repaired and certified for use.

TSP contracted with the Owner to provide all of the steel plate and code welding necessary to complete repairs.  TSP mobilized its team of certified welders to place and secure the quarter inch steel.  Welding was completed in a matter of days.

Once welding operations were complete, TSP mobilized a weld inspection technician to perform vacuum box testing on the entire length of the welded areas.  Vacuum box testing revealed the welds to be air tight.

With the new floor installed and the welding successful, TSP prepared certification reports for both tanks.  At the Owner's request, TSP included calculations for thermal cycling in the event heaters are installed into the tanks.
