Beginning in April 2011, TSP began work at a vacant site near the University of Toledo Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio. The site is being developed into an outpatient clinic for the US Veteran's Administration.
The vacant site was once the home of a medical center that consisted of several buildings spread across the medical center's campus. The medical center was demolished several decades ago, before regulations required careful abatement and disposal of asbestos containing demolition debris (ACDD). In addition, over 3,000 of feet of underground steel and vitreous clay tile pipe serviced the area, all of which was insulated with asbestos containing materials (ACM).
TSP was contracted to perform asbestos abatement prior to the start of construction activities. In particular, our scope of work included:
- Trench excavation of over 3,000 feet of asbestos impacted pipe, exercising care to not disturb the ACM exposed on the surface of the piping.
- Abating the pipe, either by disposing of the pipe entirely or by removing the asbestos and sending the remaining cleaned steel for recycling.
- Construction of a temporary road to allow vehicular access to the site.
- Excavation of over 6,000 tons of ACDD and asbestos impacted soil at each of the historic demolition sites.
- Backfill and rough grading of the trenches and excavation areas.
In addition, our work was complicated by the unusually severe rains that took place during the project. Despite the complication, we were able to complete our work within budget and with only a minor delay to the schedule.
In all, the entire project was completed in under four months. Coordination allowed the developer to begin other site work even as we continued to remediate the site. Progress on completing the VA Clinic is able to proceed unhindered by concerns over asbestos.
